How to Maintain a LongDistance Relationship
From Philly to Erie
By Ashley Holliday
Embarrassing Photo Star: David Rhodes
Step 1 – The Distance


How far is too far? (400 miles is good for me)
Can you visit easily?
Step 2 – The Visit

How often can you visit? (once a month tends to
be the trend)

$$ (Penna. Turnpike tolls - $16. Gas for a ‘95 Ford
Explorer - $60. Food at service plazas - $5 – 10)

Life cost (school vacation, request off work)
Step 3 – Communication




For the time inbetween –
AIM or another form of messenger
Phone – free long distance or
nights/weekends (ouch to cell bills)
Webcam to make faces
Step 4 - Trust



Like any relationship, be each others’ best
friend.
Learn to trust early on, or else you may
become paranoid.
No, the “different zip-code” rule does not
apply here.
Step 5 – Getting Along


Learn to like each others’ interests, or at
least support them
Cheer them on – support choices and be a
fan
Step 6 – Travel Together


Since you only get once a month, that
usually means a weekend to a week
together
Take vacations!
Step 7 – Plan for the Future

Shorten the distance when you’re ready
Step 8 – Have Fun!

It may be tough, but it’s well worth the
effort spent in the end!
Inspiration…

“Wind is to fire as distance is to love; it
extinguishes the small and enflames the
great.”
“Then we’re more
enflamed than a
broken
appendage!”
