Part 2 – Shadow Tracking
Main Ideas/Content
• Effects of the Sun
– Damage to the skin is caused by the Sun’s
ultraviolet radiation.
• Sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am -2 pm
– Melanin is responsible for variations in the color
of human skin.
– It is especially dangerous to look at the Sun during
a solar eclipse.
– The Sun is the best source of Vitamin D.
Part 2 – Shadow Tracking
• Shadows
– The Sun is always on the side of the object that is opposite
the shadow.
– The Sun’s position in the sky changes. The higher the sun
is in the sky, the shorter the shadows are.
• The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
• The Sun is highest in the sky around noon.
Part 2 – Shadow Tracking
Vocabulary
• Compass – an instrument used to determine direction.
The needle always points to magnetic north.
• Sun – star around which Earth and the other planets
revolve. It gives us heat, light, and energy.
• Direction – course or line along which something
moves, lies, or points.
• Pigment – a chemical that reflects or carries light.
• Corona – extremely bright ring of light around the
edge of the Sun, that is only visible during a solar
eclipse
At what time of day were these shadows cast? Morning, noon,
or afternoon? (use the compass and size of the shadow to help
you decide!)
