Faith

Shahada: formulated declaration of belief

Prayer

Salat: obligatory 5 times daily prayer
◦ Dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and
nightfall
Prayers come from the Quran and are
said in Arabic
 It is preferable to worship together in a
mosque, but the prayers can be said
anywhere

Call to Prayer

The Fast

Ramadan
◦ Month long fast from dawn to dusk
◦ Abstaining from food, drink and sexual
relations
◦ Observation begins at puberty

Fasting is regarded as a method for self
purification as well as a means for gaining
sympathy for those who live without.
The Zakat
Zakat: The giving of alms
 All things belong to God and wealth is
entrusted to humans.
 Zakat is individually calculated, but it is
usually 2.5% of one’s income.

Pilgrimage

Annual pilgrimage to Makkah, the Hajj
◦ Obligatory for those who are financially and
physically able

Hajj begins the12th month of the Islamic
calendar
◦ It sometimes falls in the summer, sometimes
winter.

Pilgrims wear simple garments as to stand
equal before God
