Islamic Terms
• Qibla wall designates the direction of Mecca
• Mihrab (niche) signifies a holy place; like the shrine for
the Torah scroll in synagogue and frames for gods or saints in Roman
and Christian sanctuaries
• Maqsura, an enclosure in front of the mihrab for the ruler and
other dignitaries, became a regular feature after an assassination
attempt on the ruler
• Minbar, or pulpit/throne, stands by the mihrab as the place for the
prayer leader and a symbol of authority
• Minarets, towers from which muezzins (or criers), call the faithful
to prayer, they also rise outside the mosque as a symbol of Islam’s
presence in a city
