GEOMETRY B
WELCOME!
1. Syllabus
2. Questions?
3. Let’s get to work!
Chapter 1
Pg. 3
Conceptual Objective (CO):
1. Basic language of Geometry
2. The building blocks of Geometry:
Points, Lines, Planes, Segments, Rays, and Angles
Do It To It (DITI): We will begin to discuss this chapter
today. You will need to BRIEFLY READ THRU THE
ENTIRE CHAPTER on YOUR OWN tonight. You will
recognize much of the material.
Chapter 1
Pg. 3
Your first quiz will be tomorrow on Tuesday June 24.
It will include Section 1.1 – 1.6 and the Algebra Rev.
Pkt.
Your first Test is on Friday June 27. It will include Ch 1
and Ch 2.
Chapter 1-1
Patterns and Inductive Reasoning
Pg. 3
Conceptual Objective (CO):
1. Learn to look for patterns
2. Use inductive reasoning to make conjectures and find
counterexamples
Do It To It (DITI): 1. Look at examples and guess/check a few
possibilities
2. Make a conjecture that you believe to be true
3. Try to prove your conjecture. Be flexible and
willing to change your conjecture if you find
a counterexample or can not prove it.
Chapter 1-1
Pg. 3
Do It To It (DITI) (cont) :
You can disprove a conjecture with one counterexample.
BUT…
YOU CAN NOT PROVE A CONJECTURE WITH ONE EXAMPLE!
Let’s do PW 1-1 A ODDS, now, in pairs, in 5 minutes or less!
Chapter 1-2
Points, Lines, and Planes
Pg. 10
Conceptual Objective (CO): The building blocks of Geometry:
Points, Lines, Planes
These are merely concepts in Geometry. However, to put them
down on a piece of paper requires a visual representation.
Do It To It (DITI): Learn the definitions of and symbols used to
label Points, Lines, and Planes. Read thru Section 1-2 NOW
quietly.
Section 1-2
Labeling Lines
RAY: Starts at A, goes thru B, then goes forever in one direction
LINE: Goes forever in both directions and passes thru A and B
AB
SEGMENT: Has endpoints A and B
AB
MEASURE or DISTANCE between A and B
HOMEWORK
Pg 6: #1-23 ODD, 24-28
Pg 13: #1-43 ODD
Chapter 1-3
Segments and their Measures
Pg. 17
Conceptual Objective 1 (CO 1): Distance is a simple idea that we all
know coming in to this course. With common sense, and the
distance formula, you should have no trouble.
Do It To It (DITI): Read pp17 and 18 up to but not including the
Segment Addition Postulate.
Be sure to learn the new vocabulary Postulate and Axiom
And recall the terms coordinate, distance and length.
Chapter 1-3
Conceptual Objective 2 (CO): Like anything else, Segments can be
divided into parts. The sum of the distances (or measures) of the
parts equals the total distance (or measure) of the original Segment.
Like, Duh.
Do It To It (DITI): Read pp 18-20 NOW quietly. Specifically note
the idea of congruent segments and how they are represented in
symbols. Also, recall Distance Formula and Pythagorean Theorem.
Chapter 1-3
Let’s practice with worksheet 1.3 A #7-19 ODD, now, at your desk.
Work with at least one peer…discussion is a critical part of learning,
especially math. .
Section 1-4
Angles and Their Measures
Pg. 26
Conceptual Objective (CO): MORE of the building blocks of
Geometry: Rays and Angles
Do It To It (DITI): Read Chapter 1-4, now, quietly. Then, we’ll
check out a nice series of Geometer Sketchpad sketches to help us
out.
HOMEWORK 1-3/1-4
Pg 21: #1- 39 ODD
Pg 28: #1- 39 ODD
Quick Check
TASK FOR EVERYONE: Draw a diagram showing two congruent
segments. Indicate that they are congruent by the use of symbols as
well.
I need three volunteers to put their work on the board!
Chapter 1-5
Segment and Angle Bisectors
Pg. 34
Conceptual Objective (CO): We can divide Angles and Segments
into parts as we have seen. When we split them exactly in half we
use the terms Bisect and Bisector.
Do It To It (DITI): When you create two Angles or Segments of the
same length it leads us to two ideas: The first is the use of
congruence marks. The second is the MidPoint Formula.
Chapter 1-6
Angles Pair Relationships
Pg. 44
Conceptual Objective (CO): Learn to recognize, name and
understand the relationship between pairs of angles
Do It To It (DITI): Let’s check out a nice series of Geometer
Sketchpad sketches to help us out.
HOMEWORK 1-5 and 1-6
PW 1-5 ALL and PW 1-6 ALL
Chapter 1-7
Intro to Perimeter, Circumference,
and Area
Pg. 51
CO/DITI: You already know these formulas from your WAK.
The most important part of this section is the
Problem-Solving Plan on pg 53. You will use this
DAILY for the rest of the course. Let’s take a look.
HOMEWORK 1-7
Pg 55: #9 – 19 ODD
Pg 60: Chapter Review ODD
