Beginnings
"teachings of the Awakened One"
Started 5th century BC with the teachings of
Siddhartha Gautama, "the Buddha.“
Began in India
Tipitaka – the Buddhist religious text. 11 times
the size of the bible.
No supreme being that created the world
A Buddha is anyone who has achieved
awakening.
Believe there have been many Buddha’s.
No self, collection of parts and events.
Different Types
Theravada, East Asian Buddhism
and Tibetan Buddhism
alternative two divisions,
Theravada and Mahayana
Mahayana includes both East Asian
and Tibetan Buddhism
Four Noble Truths
in life there is Dukkha
(sorrow/suffering) caused by desire
and can ended by following the Noble
Eightfold Path
Four Noble Truths:
There is suffering
There is a cause of suffering—craving
There is the cessation of suffering
(nirvana)
Nirvana- a state of happiness and peace.
There is a way leading to the end of
suffering—the Noble Eightfold Path
Noble Eight Fold Path
1. Right Speech—One speaks in a non hurtful-truthful way.
2. Right Action -Avoiding action that would do harm.
3. Right Livelihood—No harm to oneself or others
4. Right Effort/Exercise—makes an effort to improve.
5. Right Mindfulness/Awareness—ability to see things for
what they are with clear consciousness.
6. Right Concentration/Meditation—Aware of the present
reality within oneself, without any craving
7. Right Understanding—Understanding reality as it is, not
just as it appears to be.
8. Right Thoughts—Change of thinking.
The Buddha (Awakened One). attained
Awakening as the Buddha and helped others to
attain it.
The Dharma: The teachings as shown by the
Buddha.
Sila- intentional moral behavior
1. Refrain from taking life.
2. Refrain from taking that which is not given (not committing
theft)
3. Refrain from sensual misconduct (abstinence from
immoral sexual behavior)
4. Refrain from lying. (speaking truth always)
5. Refrain from intoxicants
(refrain from using drugs or alcohol)
6. Refrain from eating at the wrong time (only eat from
sunrise to
noon)
