It was founded by a Hindu Prince, Siddhārtha
Gautama. He lived from 563-4483 BCE.
He was searching for the meaning of human
suffering.
While meditating under Bidhi tree he became
enlightened.
The name Buddha means enlightened one.

To move towards
Nirvana which is peace
and harmony.
The goal is to reach
Nirvana/ Inner Peace.
Divisions of
Buddhism
 Theravada- main principles
based on meditation and
simplicity. They also believed
that Buddha was a great
prophet but not a God.
 Mahayana- the main principles
were based on rituals. It was
also believed that Buddha was
a God like deity.
Side Notes
 Bodhisattva- an enlightened being or state of living in
which one is enlightened.
 Sputa- a mound that contains Buddhist relics.
 Monasteries- buildings reserved for prayer and
meditation.
