Buddhism
• Began in Ancient
India (modern Nepal)
around 500 BCE
• Today it’s practiced
by over 390 million
people throughout the
world.
• It is based on the
teachings of the
Buddha
Buddha means:
• “Awakened” or
“Enlightened One”
• To be enlightened means
to know the cause of
suffering in the world
• It’s the title given to
Siddhartha Gautama, the
founder of Buddhism.
• Buddha taught people
that they can escape the
suffering of the world by
following his example
The Four Noble Truths
1. Suffering is a part of life.
2. The reason people suffer is
because of their desires and
attachments.
3. To end suffering you must
overcome your desires and
attachments.
4. The way to end desire is by
following the Eightfold Path.
Eightfold Path
The purpose is to guide followers on how to live their lives.
Basically: Live in moderation and avoid extremes-do not live to
excess and do not live in self-denial

The Law of Karma
• Every action results in another action
• Positive actions result in good karma; negative
ones lead to bad karma.
• "According to the seed that’s sown,
So is the fruit you reap there from,
Doer of good will gather good,
Doer of evil, evil reaps,
Down is the seed and thou shalt taste
The fruit thereof." -Buddhist text

• Buddhists believe that
karma affects how one
is reborn in the cycle
of death and rebirth:
reincarnation
• The ultimate goal of
Buddhist practice is to
stop being
reincarnated over and
over again.
• This could take many,
many lifetimes
Nirvana
• The end of all suffering is called nirvana.
• Nirvana is a state of peace; it is the final
release, or liberation, from the cycle of
reincarnation.
• The goal of Buddhism is to reach nirvana.
Spread of Buddhism
The best way to attain nirvana: be
monk, nun, meditate
