Divine Command Theory
(Religious Authority)
• Someone who is religious
usually makes decisions
based on what their
religion tells them this is
called ‘Religious
Authority.’
• Information will often
come from their holy
book or an important
person in their religion.
Copy the information above about Religious Authority
into your jotter.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• For Jews and
Christians, these
teachings are very
important
• They are thought to
be over three
thousand years old
• They can be found in
Exodus, ch 20 and
Deuteronomy, ch 5.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• Believers say
that God
gave the
commandments to
Moses at Mt
Sinai (in
present-day
Egypt).
Near the summit of Mt Sinai, where Moses
received the 10 Commandments. The
mountain is about 7,000 feet high.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
Many believe that God wrote the commandments on two pieces of stone.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• These stone ‘tablets’
were then kept inside
a specially made box
called the ark of the
covenant
• This was kept at the
temple in Jerusalem
• Experts think the ark
was destroyed long
ago – perhaps before
the time of Jesus.

temple in Jerusalem. The Romans
destroyed it in 70 AD.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
The ark cropped up in the 1980s blockbuster ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• Here are the 10 Commandments. With a
partner, decide which are the most
important and which are the least
important.
• List them in order of importance in your
jotter:
no 1 – most important
no 10 – least important.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• You must not commit adultery.
• You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down
to it or worship it.
• You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
• You must not steal.
• You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You
shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor
anything that belongs to your neighbour.
• Respect your father and mother.
• You must not give false evidence against your
neighbour.
• You shall have no other Gods but me.
• You must not kill.
• You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY –
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• If the 10 Commandments were being
written today, which ones might you want
removed?
• Write out another commandment (for each
one you remove) which you think is more
appropriate for today’s world, eg
- always oppose racism.
