Volcanoes!
Earthquakes are Like Fireworks!
Gather Your Facts
• You will need to summarize your team’s
findings from your reading and lab so
others will understand your portion of this
lab
• You will need to complete a graphic
organizer with key elements to your topic
Volcanoes Period 3
1st Finding: Magma is made up
melted rock crystals and dissolved
gasses. Magma is found deep in
the earth’s interior.
Key elements
from Volcano
Reading:
2nd Finding: Dark flat lava plains cover
About 17% of the moon’s total
surface! They are called Maria from
the latin word of seas
3rd Finding:When magma erupts in
the planet’s surface it forms lava.
Lab Finding: The more pressure on
the syringe caused more lava to flow
through the crater. Think of Mason’s
armpit example!
Earthquakes Period 3
1st Finding: Tectonics is the study of
how the outer of a planet can shift
and break.
Key elements
from Earthquake
Reading:
2nd Finding: Fracturing due to extreme
temperature changes is common on
moons and planets without
atmosphere.
3rd Finding: Fassae is a set of Valleys
on Mars formed when the crust is
stretched and fractured.
Lab Finding: The more twisting and
pulling the more cracks. Pushing
and pulling also causes mountains
and valleys.
Wind Erosion Period 3
1st Finding: Wind is a gas in motion,
and it can only exist with planets
with atmospheres.
Key elements
from Wind
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: A dense atmosphere can
erode a surface faster than a thin
atmosphere.
3rd Finding: Winds on Venus in the
upper atmosphere can reach up to
350 KPH. In the lower atmosphere
the wind speed is around 0 KPH.
Lab Finding : During the lab, we
learned that particles of sand or dirt
fly with the wind. Faster winds would
result in more erosion!
Water Erosion Period 3
1st Finding: The entire Grand
Canyon can fit inside Valles
Marineris
Key elements
from Water
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: The channels of Vedra
Valles are probably 200 to 300 meters
deep
3rd Finding: Complex stream patterns
often look like human nerves.
Lab Finding : At the source, there is
more erosion. At the mouth, there
was delta.
Volcanoes Period 4
1st Finding: Magma is made up of
melted rock and crystal and
dissolved gasses
Key elements
from Volcano
Reading:
2nd Finding: volcanoes are found on
other planets and moons causing
them to have shield volcanoes.
3rd Finding: shield volcanoes are
bigger other planets because the
crust on other planets is not made of
moving plates like Earth’s is
Lab Finding : The craters that were
made were filled with lava. The lava
spewed because of PRESSURE!
Earthquakes Period 4
1st Finding: Earthquakes occur
along faults on Earth
Key elements
from Earthquake
Reading:
2nd Finding: Faults occur when parts
of the outer layer move past one
another
3rd Finding: Extreme temperature
changes from day to night also can
cause fractures
Lab Finding : The movement of
tectonic plates causes earthquakes
Wind Erosion Period 4
:
1st Finding: Mercury, Moon,
asteroids, and many moons of
gaseous planets don’t have an
atmosphere, which = 0 wind
Key elements
from Wind
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: In thinner atmosphere
wind must be faster to erode rocks.
3rd Finding: Wind erosion on Mars
swept away particles and left behind
boulders.
Lab Finding : The lightest material
blew away. This left the heavier
sand.
Water Erosion Period 4
1st Finding: A stream pattern
depends on the slope, topography
and the amount of water that flows
across the surface.
Key elements
from Water
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: Flowing water erodes
rocks and creates canyons, valleys,
and stream networks.
3rd Finding: The source of water can include underwater springs, melting snow or
ice caps, or rain. 3rd Finding: Scientists believe that unlike Earth, other planets
crusts are not made of moving plates. This means that other planets volcanoes are
many times larger than those on earth. While erosion is a natural process, human
activities have increased by 10-40 times the rate at which erosion is occurring
globally. Excessive erosion causes problems such as desertification, decreases in
agricultural productivity due to land degradation, sedimentation of waterways, and
ecological collapse due to loss of the nutrient rich upper soil layers. Water and wind
erosion are now the two primary causes of land degradation; combined, they are
responsible for 84% of degraded acreage, making excessive erosion one of the
most significant global environmental problems. Thanks SAM!
Lab Finding :
Volcanoes Period 5
1st Finding: Magma is made up of
melted rock, crystals, and dissolved
gases. Thanks for the SOUP
example!
Key elements
from Volcano
Reading:
2nd Finding: Dark, flat lava plains
cover 17% of the moons total surface.
1/3 of Earth is field of these plains!
3rd Finding: Scientists believe that unlike
Earth, other planets crusts are not made
of moving plates. This means that other
planets volcanoes are many times larger
than those on earth. Earth is unique!
Lab Finding : Volcanoes remind us of
the water cycle! Think of BARFING!
Earthquakes Period 5
1st Finding: Tectonics is how the
outer layer of a planet can shift and
break.
Key elements
from Earthquake
Reading:
2nd Finding: When two parallel faults
form the block of crusts down with a
ridge forming between them.
3rd Finding: Extreme Temperature
changes from day to night also can
cause fracturing. Think of an ice
cube!
Lab Finding : Earthquakes are like
glass. Sometimes they pile up
Water Erosion Period 5
1st Finding: The source or that water
can invade underwater melting
snow, ice caps or rain.
Key elements
from Wind
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: The entire grand canyon
could fit inside a small section of
Valles Mariners.
3rd Finding: A stream pattern
depends on the slope, topography,
soil type, and amount of water that
flows across the surface.
Lab Finding : The steeper the slope
the deeper the canyon
Wind Erosion Period 5
1st Finding: Wind can only exist on
planets with an atmosphere.
Key elements
from Water
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: Wind blows in the
direction of a planets rotation.
3rd Finding: The thicker the
atmosphere on a planet the stronger
the wind.
Lab Finding : Relates to pulling
someone across pavement! Think of
different weights of people!
Volcanoes Period 8
Key elements
from Volcano
Reading:
1st Finding:
Magma is made up of rock,
crystal, and dissolved gasses. A
volcano is like a pimple or a
balloon
2nd Finding:
Moon’s Maria is made up off volcanic rock
similar to the rock on Earth’s ocean floor.
Have you ever felt the bottom of the
ocean.
3rd Finding:
The largest dome on Venus is 65 km.
across. Pothole example
Lab Finding : A volcano is caused
from pressure from underneath the
earth.
Earthquakes Period 8
1st Finding: tectonics is the study of
how the outer layer of our plant can
shift and break.
Key elements
from Earthquake
Reading:
2nd Finding: when the outer layer of a
planet collide the rock folds.
3rd Finding: when the two parallel
faults form the block of crust
between them may drop with a ridge
forming between them.
Lab Finding : Whenever plates
move, they sometimes come
together.
Wind Erosion Period 8
1st Finding: Wind only exists on
planets with atmospheres.
The moon still has the
footprints on it!
Key elements
from Wind
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding:
The thinner the
atmosphere, the faster the
wind has to blow to impact
the surface.
3rd Finding:
The upper atmosphere of
Venus is very windy , the
winds can be 350 kph.
Lab Finding : Erosion is caused by
wind blowing. Baseball field
example!
Water Erosion Period 8
1st Finding: the source of water can
include underwater springs, melting
snow or ice caps, or rain.
Key elements
from Water
Erosion Reading:
2nd Finding: A stream pattern depends
on the slope, topography, soil type,
and amount of water that flows across
the surface. Upper and Lower Egypt
example
3rd Finding: The Grand Canyon can
fit in a small portion of Valles
Marinenis. Bracelet example
Lab Finding :The steeper the hill that
water is flowing down will create a
deeper valley!
