Layers of the Earth
 There are 4 layers of the earth
1. Crust
2. Mantle
3. Outer core
4. Inner core
 As you go deeper into earth…
 Pressure increases
 Temperature increases
 Density increases
But scientists can not travel below the
crust to the inside of the earth, so how
do they know this?
Evidence
1.
Rock Samples – volcanoes erupt rocks from 100 km
below the surface of the earth
2.
Seismic Waves – earthquake waves travel at
different speeds through each layer of the earth

Sequence It!
1. Put the layers of the earth in order from the insideto the outside
 Inner Core
 Outer Core
 Mantle
 Crust
2. Put the layers of the earth in order from the thinnestto the thickest
 Crust
 Inner Core
 Outer Core
 Mantle
3. Put the layers of the earth in order from the coldestto the hottest
 Crust
 Mantle
 Outer Core
 Inner Core
Two Truths and A Lie:
1. Crust
A. The crust is as thin as 3 mi and as thick as 25 mi.
B. The crust is liquid.
C. The crust is the very top layer of the earth’s layers.
2. Mantle
A. The mantle is 1,800 mi thick – from Colorado to New York.
B. The mantle is extremely hot but solid.
C. The mantle is made up of mostly water.
3. Outer Core
A. The outer core is 800 mi thick – from Colorado to Alabama.
B. The outer core is liquid metal.
C. The outer core has more pressure then the crust and mantle.
4. Inner Core
A. The inner core is 800 mi thick.
B. The inner core is made of nickel and iron.
C. The inner core is not as hot as the mantle.
RAFT
 You are an investigative reporter
traveling to the center of the Earth.
 Write a report for your newspaper,
the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel,
explaining to your readers how it
feels to travel into the Earth.
 Think about how the temperature,
pressure and density might affect
you as your travel further and
further inside.
 Use at least 3 complete sentences
and include a title.
