Mars
By: Maria Rosa-Bian
Planet Symbol
• In Greek, Mars means Ares and Ares is the
God of War.
Discovery
• Mars was discovered by the ancients
• It is unknown when Mars was discovered
• The first telescopic observation of mars was by
Galileo in 1610
Measurements
•
•
•
•
Mass: 614,693,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg
Volume: 163,115,609,799 km3
Density: 3.934 g/cm3
Gravity: 3.71 m/s2
• Mars would sink if it was placed in water.
Mars’ Atmosphere
• Thin atmosphere
• Consists of Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, and
Argon
Distances
• 4th planet from the Sun
Distance from sun- 227,900,000 km
Distance from the earth- 56,000,000
km
Temperatures
• Mars has a very large temperature range
• (-125* C to 23* C)
Orbit/Rotation
• It takes 686.971 days for Mars to orbit the Sun
• It takes 24.623 hours for Mars to rotate on its
own axis
Composition
• One of the terrestrial planets (rocky)
• The crust of the planet is cold, and it gets
warmer closer to the core
Water & Rings
• Mars is too cold to have liquid water, but on
the Northern and Southern poles, there are
meters of thick ice caps
• Mars has no rings
Weather
• Changes dramatically
• Dry/cold/clear
• Can change 110* C in one
night
• Has seasons
• Can get to -140*C in the
winter
Moons
• 2 moons
• Phobos and Deimos
• Both were discovered in
1877 by Asaph Hall
• Phobos- larger moon
• Deimos- smaller moon
Human Travel to Mars…?
• Less gravity on Mars than Earth… you would
float around
• You would freeze because of the cold
temperatures
