Tornado
• The Fujita scale is how tornadoes are measured, F0-F5
• They usually form from a thunderstorm
• Their shape is a funnel
Hurricane
• The eye is the calmest part of the storm
• They form over really warm ocean water 80 F or warmer
• The storm surge is the most devastating part of the storm
Earthquake
• The Richter Scale measures the seismic waves of an earthquake
• Occur at Fault Lines where the tectonic plates slide against each
other
• Can last for a few second or several minutes
Tsunami
• A series of ocean waves caused by underwater earthquake,
landslide, or volcanic eruption
• The first wave is usually not the strongest
• Can travel speeds up to 500 MPH
Flood
• They can develop slowly or in matters of minutes (Flash Flood)
• The types of floods are urban, flash, coastal, river, or ponding
• They are defined as water covering land where it normally doesn’t
cover
Blizzard
• Wind speed exceeds 35 mph, and visibility less than ¼
mile for more than 3 hours
• The snowfall as little to do with the storm it is about the
wind intensity
• Two types of blizzards: ground & severe
Volcano
• A mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten
rock below Earth’s surface
• When pressure builds up eruption occurs
• Gasses and rock shoot out of the opening, spill over or
fill air with lava
Wildfire
• Uncontrolled fire that occurs usually in unpopulated
areas, but can occur anywhere
• Three things need to be present for a wildfire: Fuel,
oxygen, and a heat source
• Moves at speeds up to 14 mph, burning everything
