• Vesuvio is a mountain shape volcano in
the Gulf of Naples
• it is not currently erupting, it is sleeping
• Mount Vesuvius is best known for its
eruption in AD 79 that destroyed of the
Roman cities of Pompeii and
Herculaneum. They were never rebuilt.
The towns' locations were rediscovered in
the 18th century.
Explosions
• From 79 B. C. up to 1944
• There has been no eruption since 1944,
and none of the post-79 eruptions were as
large or destructive as the Pompeian one.
Other Volcanoes
• The two other major active volcanoes in
Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on
