3.Why did it
happen?
Mexico city is
located in the
Cocos plate
and also a
small part in
North
American
plate.
The problem was that the Cocos plate was
subducting the North American plate,
Causing a big seismic wave. The earthquake
had an intensity of IX-XI in the Mercalli scale.
• There were 2,831 buildings damaged for the entire
city.
• About 5,000 people died.
• The area most severely hit by the earthquake had the
highest concentration of hospitals. Thirteen
hospitals of six or more floors were partially or
totally destroyed, most of these public institutions.
• 1,687 school buildings were damaged.
Could it happen again?
• This type of catostrophe will probably
happen again.
• The center of the city is really pretty close to
the center of the old lake bed and that lake
bed has a relatively high water content.
When there is considerable shaking then
liquification of the sediment takes place
making it unsuitable to support large
structures.

• There were also some other earthquakes
in Mexico :
• In July of 1957 ; 6.7 degrees.
• 25 of October 1981 ; 7.3 degrees.
• 20 of September 1985 ; 7.9 degrees.
• 5 of May 2013 ; 5 degrees.
• Mexico is in the boundary of the Coco´s
plate. It is joined with the Caribbean
plate and The North American one.
• It is not a very rich city so the disasters
produced are bigger.
