Transcript 2.4 Movement of Lithospheric Plates
Warm-Up
1) What happens when two cars crash into each other?
2) What happens when you rub your hand against carpet?
3) What happens when you pull apart a Snicker’s candy bar?
4) Why does a hot air balloon rise?
Daily Objective
• SWBAT explain movement of the lithospheric
plates.
• SWBAT infer the relationship between the
type of plate boundary and the locations of
various natural features such as ocean
trenches, mountain ranges and mid-ocean
ridges.
2
Thought for the day
Focus on all that you do, whether the
task be big or small. This will lead you to
the path of excellence.

Plate tectonics
• Scientific theory that describes the
large-scale movement of the
lithosphere
8
Now let’s take
a closer look
At the earth’s interior
9
Examine the chart of the layers of the Earth and answer
the following questions:
1.What is the thickest layer of the Earth?
2.What is the densest layer of the Earth?
is this layer found?
3.What is the least dense layer of the Earth?
this layer found?
Where
Where is
So…
What’s it supposed to
look like?
11
What about particles?
How do particles change when they are
cold and hot?
Colder particles
Hotter particles
THEREFORE:
Hotter objects are ___________ dense
and colder objects are ____________
dense.
YOUTUBE CLIPS

Convection
• The transfer of heat in the
asthenosphere due to unequal
heat from the core as magma
heats up and rises, then cools
down and sinks
• Responsible for the movement of
the tectonic plates
Why does it
matter?
Let’s find out!
16
Take out your notes!
• Look at the bottom half of the first page
– you should have an empty chart.

Himalayan Mountains
At the border of India and
Asia.
Tallest mountain range in
the world and includes
Mount Everest.
Himalayan Mountains
East African Rift Valley
Located in East Africa.
Runs for thousands of miles.
Has created great lakes and
the largest waterfall in the
world.
This is the beginning of the
breakup of a continent. As
the rifting continues, it will
lengthen and deepen and
eventually will split the
continent and in two.
East African Rift Valley
San Andreas Fault
The San Andreas Fault
is a continental
transform boundary
that runs a length of
roughly 810 miles
through California
It forms the tectonic
boundary between the
Pacific Plate and the
North American Plate.
It is the most studied
fault on the planet.
