Day1
2012
 Geologists are scientists who study the
forces that make and shape the planet Earth.
 Geologists study the Earth’s interior
through seismic waves.
Geologists discovered the Earth has three layersthe crust, the mantle, and the core.
The oceanic crust beneath the ocean consists
mostly of dense rock.
Continental crust also consists of dense rock.
The crust makes up the lithosphere.
The asthenosphere is a soft layer that can bend
like plastic.
The lithophere sits on top of the asthenophere
 Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental
drift.
 Continental drift is Wegener’s theory that all continents
had once been joined together in a single landmass and
have drifted apart since.
 Wegener named this supercontinent Pangaea.

Think, Pair, Share
Based on the evidence, do you support the
Theory of Continental Drift? Explain.
 The lithosphere is broken into separate
sections called plates.
 The geological theory that states that pieces
of Earth’s lithosphere are in constant, slow
motion, driven by convection currents in the
mantle is plate tectonics.
Prediction
In your notebook, write a prediction of the
outcome of plate tectonic movement after
the next 1 million years.
Hot magma in the Earth moves
toward the surface, cools, then sinks
again.
Creates convection currents beneath
the plates that cause the plates to
move.

REFLECTION In your notebook: What did you learn
today? Would you support this theory or
is there another theory that you would
create?
