Nature’s Fury
What are some things people can
do to cope with nature’s fury?
What sorts of violent weather
have you experienced?
Thunder and lightning occur
throughout the world.
Ships have been lost at sea
as a result of violent storms.
Throughout parts of the world,
earthquakes cause terror and
devastation.
Buildings crumble as a result
of the earth’s violent shaking.
When homes and other buildings are
destroyed in quakes, people might
resort to living in tents …
… and having school take
place in crowded tents, too.
Mudslides can result from
heavy rains.
Heavy rains sometimes cause
neighborhoods to flood.
Flooding can cause roads to wash
away and leave people homeless.
Animals need to be rescued
and led to safety.
The flag signals an
approaching hurricane.
Hurricane winds and heavy rainfall
can turn streets into rivers.
Some storm chasers are
scientists or photographers …
… while other storm chasers just
want to view the amazing power of
nature.
Meteorologists forecast the weather
to help people prepare for what’s to
come.
Scientists are able to record earthquake
activity using seismograms.
Tsunamis are not easy to predict
or track and can be deadly.
Volcanoes are formed when magma
pushes through weak spots in the
earth’s crust.
Volcanic eruptions can cause
mass destruction.
People rely on emergency aid
after a catastrophe …
… or they prepare in advance
by having supplies on hand.
Relief organizations try to provide
food, clothes, medicine and shelter to
those who survive nature’s fury.
