The ICDP Information Network
Telework and Information Management in
Scientific Drilling Projects
Jens Klump and Ronald Conze

What is the ICDP?
The International Continental Scientific
Drilling Program is a multinational
programme to further and fund geosciences
in the field of continental scientific drilling.
Members are: Austria, Canada, China, Czech
Republic, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Mexico,
Norway, Poland, USA, as well as UNESCO,
ODP and Schlumberger Inc.
ICDP Participants and Projects
ICDP Goals
Scientific Drilling gives us an insight into the
processes and structures inside the earth.
The drilling locations are chosen as key sites
of the earth system.
The results give us the information we need
to develop responsible and sustainable
strategies to manage our environment and
Earth’s natural resources.

Telework in ICDP Projects
ICDP activities are international
collaborative projects.
Data are collected at a central site and
redistributed via the internet.
Communication and data access within the
ICDP Information Network are channelled
through ICDP project portals.
The ICDP Information Network
To facilitate telework within the ICDP, the ICDP
Information Network has two main aims:
1. Provide project information and communication
tools for all members of the science team.
2. Allow project members to access and analyse
complex project data and derived data products.
These services are integrated into project portals.

Data Access through Web
Portals
The power of a database system does not lie
in storing data, but in its ability to recompile
data in a new and meaningful way.
Besides the provision of simple data tables,
the database has to serve as a base for more
advanced tools for the display and analysis of
data.
Access to data can be aided by project portals.
What are Portals?
Access to a broad array of online resources
and services.
Recognisable topic hierarchies.
Powerful search technologies.
Personalised services.
Configurable presentation.
Integration of heterogeneous corporate
resources.

From Data to Knowledge
Data management is only the first step.
Advanced tools are needed to allow
researchers to extract information from
datasets.
Communication about the newly gained
information creates knowledge.

The ICDP Information Network:
Summary
The ICDP Information Network is a system for telework in
geosciences. It offers:
Management of data acquired by a globally distributed
group of researchers,
Access to complex scientific drilling project data for all
members of the scientific team, worldwide,
Tools to communicate the newly gained information.
The ICDP Information Network is a first step towards
knowledge management in geosciences.
