Structures of the Earth
4 Layers of the Earth
Essential Standards
• 6.E.2 Understand the structure of the earth
and how interactions of constructive and
destructive forces have resulted in changes in
the surface of the Earth over time and the
effects of the lithosphere on humans.
Clarifying Objectives
• 6.E.2.1 Summarize the structure of the earth,
including the layers, the mantle and core
based on the relative position, composition
and density.
Essential Questions
• What are the Layers of the Earth?
• What is the order of DENSITY of the Earth’s
Layers?
• What materials & elements make up each layer of
the Earth?
• What position from inner to outer are the Earth’s
Layers found?
EOG Questions
• What is the COMPOSITION of the Earth’s
core?
• What is the order of DENSITY of the Earth’s
Layers?
Where it all Starts
• The Earth- the earth is
made mostly of rock
• 75% or ¾ of the earth is
covered in liquid water
• There are 4 layers to the
earth…
① Inner Core
② Outer Core
③ Mantle
④ Crust

Layers of the Earth
• Layers of the EarthPhysical Structure of the
Earth from inside to
outside
• Layers of the Earth tell
scientists
① Position
② Composition
③ Density
Earth’s Density
• Remember that DENSITY is
how closely pact TOGETHER
ATOMS are
• The 4 Layers of Earth has a
very distinct Density
• The layers get more & more
dense the closer you get to
the CENTER of the Earth
• Crust is the LEAST DENSE
• Inner Core is the MOST DENSE
Essential Questions
• Get with a partner and answer…
• What are the Layers of the Earth?
• What is the order of DENSITY of the Earth’s
Layers?
Earth’s Core
• The Earth’s Core make
up the first 2 Layers of
Earth
• They make up the
① Inner Core
② Outer Core

Inner Core
• The Inner Core is the
DENSEST of the 4 Layers
of Earth
• It is COMPOSED (made)
of SOLID IRON
• Inner Core is located at
the very CENTER of the
Earth
Outer Core
• The Outer Core is still
very dense it ranks 2nd
in DENSITY
• Outer Core is composed
of LIQUID IRON
• Located as the SECOND
layer of the Earth
Essential Questions
• Get with a partner and answer…
• What materials & elements make up each
layer of the Earth?
Mantle
• Mantle ranks 3rd in
DENSITY behind the Inner
& Outer Core
• Mantle is composed of a
combination of ROCKS &
GASSES that make LIQUID
MAGMA
• The Mantle makes up the
3rd layer of the Earth
Essential Questions
Get with a partner and answer…
• What materials & elements make up each
layer of the Earth?
Crust
• The Earth’s Crust ranks last
(4th) in DENSITY as it is the
LEAST dense layer of the Earth
• The Crust is composted of the
Crustal Plates & Ocean Basin
Plates
• It also contains the
Athenosphere & Lithosphere
• It makes up the 4th Layer of
the Earth

EOG Questions
• Which best describes the Earth’s Crust?
• A) It is stationary and unable to move.
• B) It is thicker than the mantle and the core.
• C) It is located between the outer and the inner core.
• D) It is composed of continental and oceanic plates.
EOG Questions
• Which best summarizes the COMPOSITION of the Earth’s Core?
• A) It contains a solid outer region surrounding a liquid iron core.
• B) It contains a liquid outer region surrounding a solid iron core.
• C) It contains a semi-liquid rock outer region surrounding a liquid
core.
• D) It contains a basalt, semi-liquid outer region surrounding a solid
core.
Important Points
• The Earth has 4 Layers that tell
scientists
① Position
② Composition
③ Density
• Inner Core
① Center of the Earth
② SOLID IRON
③ MOST DENSE
• Outer Core
① 2nd from the Center
② LIQUID IRON
③ 2nd most DENSE
• Mantle
① 3rd from the Center
② LIQUID Magma
③ 3rd most DENSE
• Crust
① LAST layer of Earth
② Crustal Plates & Oceanic Basin
Plates
③ LEAST DENSE
• Crust also includes
– Athensophere
– Lithosphere
