Transcript Our Solar System
The Solar System
contains 8 planets
that travel around
or orbit the sun.
Sun
Our Brightest Star
• The Sun is star in our
galaxy, called the Milky
Way.
• The Sun is our brightest
star. 4.5 pounds of
sunlight hit Earth every
second.
• Source of heat and light
for the planets.
Our Solar System
• Has eight planets including Earth.
• All revolve around the Sun, which is the main source of light and
heat for these nine planets.
• It is the Sun's strong pull of gravity which keeps the planets in orbit
around it.
Inner Planets
• The 4 inner planets are
Mercury, Venus, Earth,
and Mars.
• The inner planets are
composed mostly of rock.
• They are closer to the sun
so they are warmer than
the outer planets and
smaller as well.
• None of the inner planets
has more than two moons.
Mercury
Our Fastest Planet
• The closest Planet to
the Sun.
• In the daytime,
surface is hot enough
to melt lead.
• Rocky with many
craters.
• It is covered by dust,
rocks, and craters
• Length of days: 59
Earth days
• Length of year: 88
Earth days.
• No moon for itself.
Venus
Our Hottest Planet
• On Venus a day is
slightly more than
a year.
• Rotates backwards.
• Surface is rocky
with cover of thick
clouds.
• Length of day: 243
Earth days.
• Length of year:
225 Earth days.
• No moon for itself.
Earth
Our Mother Planet
• 70% of its surface is
water& the other 30% is
land.
• It’s tilt causes the seasons
on the planet.
• Earth is the only planet in
the universe which is
known to support life.
• Earth is almost five billion
years old.
• Length of day: 24 hours
• Length of year: 365 days
Mars
Our Angry Red Planet
• Mars has the largest
volcano in the solar system,
Olympus Mons.
• Surface is rocky with
volcanoes, canyons and red
dust.
• Length of day: almost 25
Earth hours.
• Length of year: almost two
Earth years.
• Two small moons.
Outer Planets
• They are all very far from
the sun, so their surfaces
are colder than the inner
planets.
• Called the gas giants, and
are in order of their
distance from the Sun.
Jupiter
Our Largest Planet
• If we were able to stand on the
surface of Jupiter, we would
weigh three times as much as
we would on Earth.
• Two Earth-sized circles could
fit inside Jupiter’s Great Red
Spot, a huge hurricane-like
storm.
• 16 moons.
• No solid surface, cold.
• Length of day: 10 Earth hours.
• Length of Year: about 12 Earth
years.
Saturn
Rings of Beauty
• Saturn is the second largest
planet.
• Saturn has 18 known moons!
• Surface is frozen gases.
• Saturn's rings are believed to
be the particles of an old
moon orbiting the planet,
smashed apart in a collision
about 50 million years ago.
• A year on Saturn would take
almost thirty Earth years.
Uranus
• Uranus is the only planet in our
solar system to roll on its side
as it orbits the sun.
• 15 known moons.
• Uranus' pale blue color is
caused by the methane in its
atmosphere which filters out red
light.
• Made of frozen gases.
• Length of year: 84 Earth years.
• Length of day: 17 Earth Hours.
Neptune
• Neptune has the
strongest winds in the
Solar System, and a dark
spot, similar to Jupiter's
Great Red Spot.
• 8 known moons.
• Made of frozen gases.
• Length of day: 19 Earth
hours.
• Length of year: 165
Earth Years.
