Greek and Latin Elements
Greek and Latin Elements
• Micro, Mega, and Hyper come from the
Greek language and Super comes from
Latin.
• All four meanings relate to size or
degree.
• Micro means small, Mega means great,
Hyper means over or beyond, and
Super means over or above.
Microscope
• an optical instrument
having a magnifying lens
or a combination of
lenses for inspecting
objects too small to be
seen or too small to be
seen distinctly and in
detail by the unaided eye
• We use a microscope to
see bacteria.
Microfilm
• a film bearing a
miniature
photographic
copy of printed or
other graphic
matter
• Can you put old
newspaper
articles on
microfilm?
Microsurgery
• any of various
surgical procedures
performed under
magnification and
with small
specialized
instruments
• Replacing blood

• an enterprise, as
a movie, that is
outstandingly

• The movie

• one million tons
• It would take a lot
of elephants to
weigh a megaton.
Megabuck
• very large sums
of money
• I would like to
have megabucks.
Megaplex
• a large building
containing many
movie theaters,
usually more than
a dozen
• I will meet you at
the megaplex to
watch a movie.
Superhero
• a hero, esp. in
children's comic
books and television
cartoons, possessing
extraordinary, often
magical powers
• Mighty Mouse was
always my favorite
superhero.
Superhighway
• a highway designed
for travel at high
speeds, having more
than one lane for
each direction of
traffic
• We have to use the
superhighway when
we go on vacation.
Superhuman
• exceeding
ordinary human
power,
achievement,
experience
• This guy has
superhuman
strength.
Superstar
• a person, as a
performer or
athlete, who
enjoys wide
recognition
• Babe Ruth was a
baseball superstar
in the 1920’s.
Superimpose
• to impose, place,
or set over,
above, or on
something else
• The artist will
superimpose the
airplane onto the
picture.
Supernatural
• of, pertaining to, or
being above or
beyond what is
natural;
unexplainable by
natural law or
phenomena
• Ripley’s Believe It or
Not deals with things
that are
supernatural.

• a very fast,
powerful
mainframe
computer, used in
advanced military
and scientific
applications
• A supercomputer
is needed for top
secret projects.
Hyperlink
• an object, as text
or graphics,
linked through
hypertext to a
document,
another object
• Follow the
hyperlink on the
website to get to
another website.
Hypersensitive
• excessively
sensitive
• People with
allergies are
hypersensitive
when they are
around what they
are allergic to.
Hyperextend
• Extension of a
bodily joint
beyond its normal
range of motion
• When you
hyperextend your
knee it is very
painful.
Hypertext
• a method of storing data
through a computer
program that allows a
user to create and link
fields of information at
will and to retrieve the
data nonsequentially
• The website used
hypertext which allowed
me to jump from one
document to another
with clickable links.
