lord except Him.” ( Surat al- Muddaththir 31)
“And sent down soldiers whom you did not see.”

Mighty Allah said

It is well known that all that in the universe are soldiers of Allah which
might be for blessing and benefit to certain people and punishment
and harm to others.
When the Messenger of Allah Mohammad ‫عليه الصالة والسالم‬
was asked what is plague? His answer was:
“The plague is a punishment that was sent down on the
children of Israel and on those before your time.
So if you hear that it has struck a land do not enter that land,
and if it breaks out in a land that you are residing in, do not go
out of the area escaping from it”
‫" الطاعون رجز أو عذاب أُرسل على بني إسرائيل أو‬:‫قال صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬
‫على من كان قبلكم فإذا سمعتم به بأرض فال تقدموا عليه واذا وقع بأرض وأنتم‬
‫بها فال تخرجوا ف ار اًر منه “ صحيح مسلم‬

Later and after hundreds of years, we now know that the
causative agent of plague is a bacterium!!!
which was directed by Allah to infect children of Israel and on
those before our time – as a punishment - and cause a very
contagious and serious disease.
Just like other soldiers such as: Wind
6 ‫عاد فأهلكوا بريح صرصر عاتية" سورة الحاقة آية‬
ٌ ‫"وأما‬
“And as for Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind”
(used for harm).
22 ‫“وأرسلنا الرياح لواقح فأنزلنا من السماء ماء فأسقيناكموه“ سورة الحجر آية‬
“And we have sent the fertilizing wind and sent down water from
the sky and given you drink from it” - used for benefit.
Fire: which is destructive but when Allah ordered it to be cool
and un-harmful (for benefit) he said:
69 ‫"قلنا يا نار كوني برداً وسالماً على إبراهيم“سورة األنبياء آية‬

“O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.”
Conclusion
Microbes are among the soldiers of Allah and are ordered by Allah to
be either for the benefit or harm of all creatures.
The role of Islam in Microbiology
Just around two hundred years ago, Alexander Yersin discovered
that the causative agent of plague is Yersinia pestis, which is
transmitted from person to person. Our prophet PBU
was the first to show that plague is highly contagious and was the
first to apply preventive measures by commanding people not
enter and not to get out of the infested area.
While the previous cultures believed that disease is an evil spirit or
due to the anger of the gods. Priests acted as doctors and treated
patients with amulets to get rid of the evil spirits.

Moreover, only around 150 years ago, scientists discovered that there
are different types of microorganisms e.g. bacteria that live on and
inside certain sites of healthy persons such as skin, mouth, throat,
conjunctiva, anterior nares, intestine and vagina as normal microbial
population .
It was also known that man is surrounded by massive numbers of
microbes e.g. bacteria, fungi & their spores, viruses and protozoa.
We are now aware that all these microbes exist in animals and in our
environment, thus may be transmitted to us, and become the source
of infection which results into different diseases.
Thus, more than 1400 years ago, our messenger peace be upon
him, gave us many instructions to avoid the harm of all
microbes. His commands were to teach us how to overcome
the harmful effects of these microorganisms and how to
prevent infection.

Mighty Allah said: By the star when it goes down, your
companion is neither astray nor being misled, nor does he say
(aught) of (his own) desire, it is no less than inspiration sent
down to him. (Surat An-Najm 1-4)
‫ «والنجم إذا هوى ما ضل صاحبكم وما غوى وما ينطق عن الهوى إن هو إال وحي‬:‫قال تعالى‬

Some of the instructions are:
1- Ablution
Expels microbes from the body through hand washing, rinsing,
sniffing water in nose and blowing it and feet washing. By
washing we rid ourselves of transient pathogens and thus
prevent many infectious diseases such as food poisoning,
typhoid fever, wound contamination. By sniffing water and
blowing it, we get rid of the attached microbes to the hair of
the nose which is similar to a strainer. This process is like
washing the strainer or filter from any dust particles loaded
with microbes, thus prevent and respiratory tract infections.. 8
2- Miswak*
Breaks down dental plaque** by mechanical removal, expels food
remnants present in the mouth and its components kill some of the
oral bacterial flora, Herpes simples type 1 and Candida albicans. It
tightens the gum and gives nice odor.
Our prophet PBU often used Miswak and after waking up. It is
scientifically known that the number of swallowing is less during
sleeping time, consequently the number of oral bacteria and their
toxic products accumulate in the mouth and exert their harmful
effect on the gingiva and teeth, giving bad odor and taste. Thus, our
prophet used Miswak frequently and strictly ordered its frequent
usage. By using Miswak we avoid many problems and diseases of
the oral cavity such as dental caries and periodontal diseases.
*Miswak
is taken from the Arak tree (Salvadora persica ) also known as the chewing
stick or the natural toothbrush. It’s usage is a religious task among Muslims.
The process of using Miswak is known as Siwak.
** Dental plaque (D. p.)
is a very thin microbial layer attached to teeth surfaces, mainly composed of
diverse aerobic and anaerobic bacteria forming matrix-embedded biofilm. The
microbial communities of D. p. vary qualitatively and quantitatively according to

many factors e.g. age, diet, site, hygiene, medication etc.
The following procedures:
Siwak, mouth rinsing and tooth picks usage, altogether,
help in minimizing the number of oral bacteria, the
amount of harmful bacterial byproducts such as enzymes,
toxins and acids which consequently prevent their
harmful effect on our teeth and gingiva (gum).
By following the previous commands we minimize and
prevent the most common diseases of the oral cavity
worldwide, namely
dental caries and periodontal diseases
with simple and inexpensive methods.
The next instructions also play a role
in controlling infection and disease:

* Bathing (showering)
* prohibited defecation in streets
* prohibited urination in stagnant water
* prohibited breathing in cups or utensils
* Cover the mouth with hand
or tissue when sneezing
* Cover the mouth when thawing
* Cover jars, pots and cups
* plucking axillary hair
* shaving pubic hair
* hand washing * nail’s clipping
The correlation between each instruction and disease will
be explained in other chapters.

‫" السواك مطهرة للفم مرضاة للرب “ " لقد أكثرت عليكم في السواك“‬
‫" لوال أن أشق على أمتي ألمرتهم بالسواك عند كل صالة " الشيخان‬
‫" كان رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم إذا قام يتهجد يشوص فاه بالسواك "‬

‫"من أكل فليتخلل فما تخلل فليلفظه وما الك بلسانه فليبتلع"‬
Some verse of holly Quran - Mighty Allah said:
- “O you who have believed, when you rise to (perform)
Prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe
over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles”. Surah Al-Ma’idah 6.
- “Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those
who purify themselves”. Surah Al-Baquarah 222.
- “And your clothing purify” Surah Al-Muddaththir 4.
- “Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead animals, blood, the flesh of
swine”. Surah Al-Ma’idah 3.

By obeying Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him,
we prevent respiratory tract infections e.g. tuberculosis,
pneumonia, whooping cough, meningitis etc. These are
serious diseases that could be fatal but prevented by applying
his instructions.
Gastrointestinal tract infections e.g. typhoid fever,
dysentery, food poisoning, cholera. Poliomyelitis, and
hepatitis may also be impeded.
Anthrax, sexual diseases and many more.
Just as Mighty Allah said
“Nothing have we omitted from the book” Surat Al-An’am 38

The West
* Antony van Leeuwenhoek 1674, made a magnifying lens
(300 times) and saw algae, bacteria & fungi while
observing pond water. He called them animalcules.
*Louis Pasteur 1860-1890 and *Robert Koch 1882
established microbiology. Pasteur disproved spontaneous
generation theory, developed cultures of bacteria,
pasteurization, discovered some pathogens and
vaccination. Koch discovered Mycobacterium tuberculosis,
Vibrio cholerae, Bacillus anthracis and established Koch’s
postulate.
*Joseph Lister 1867 used carbolic acid (phenol) as
antiseptic agent and performed operations under a spray
of phenol. Wound infections were prevented & aseptic
surgery became a standard procedure.
