2016 Science Fair Projects
Examples from 8th Grade DVMS Students
WINNER!
“Soda. . . Can it be
that bad?”
Are darker sodas more corrosive than
lighter ones? If so, what damage does that
do to your teeth and what could you use to
substitute the soda with other healthier
options?
Marissa tested how much tarnish was
removed from pennies by different types of
sodas. The more tarnish on pennies that
was removed, the more corrosive the soda
would be on your teeth. Her control group
was pennies soaked in water.
Runner Up
Who’s Thirsty?
Jackie experimental question was “What flower
would absorb water faster?. She had 4 different
types of flowers and did 4 trials each! Her project
was very well done! Excellent report, lots of great
picture books that showed the changes in her
flowers over time, and a great graphs and data
tables. One thing she did not have was a control
group. All good projects should have a control
group!!!
Runners Up
“You Put the Boom Boom
Into My Heart”
Lucas and Lena tested to see which type of music
(country, hip-hop, or rock) would increase your
heartrate the most. They had 10 students as their test
subjects. They made all 10 students listen to the
different types of music and they measured each of
their heart rates. Their control group was taking all
their heart rates with no music. They spent 2 weeks,
every day taking data!
Runner UP Project
“SUPER PLANT”
Anthony tested how different brands of
fertilizers affected plant growth. His control
group was growing plants with just water
and no fertilizer.
Anthony did an amazing job on his report!
Anthony struggled to get some of his plants
to grow (he didn’t do enough research on
how to best grow them) so he couldn’t
gather quite enough data accept or reject
his hypothesis.
Honorable Mention
“Mentha Piperita”
Fatima tested which type/brand of mint lasted the
longest. Her project was very well organized, well
written, and creative. Did not get a runner up
because the results/data of her project were difficult
to gather. She timed how long a mint would last in
student’s mouths. This was not the best technique to
collect data which made her results unreliable.
Honorable Mentions
“BACT-CHELLA”
These ladies tested which surface area of the
house contained the most bacteria: bottom of
the kitchen sink, shower drain, or refrigerator
handle. Their control group was the toilet
handle because they thought it would
stereotypically have the most bacteria and
wanted to compare it to the other 3 surface
areas.
These ladies did a great job on a well written
report and very well done backboard! They did
not get a runner up because the didn’t grow
their bacteria correctly which gave them bad
results.
