•Decomposition is another word
for rotting or ‘going off’
All dead plant and animal
and animal material will
eventually decompose or
rot.

Microscopic animals called
bacteria are responsible for
rotting our food
The nasty smells made by
food decomposing is mostly
due to gases produced by the
bacteria
More importantly,
decomposition produces an
explosive gas called methane.
Can you think why we should
try not to put food materials
into land fill?
If we put our vegetable
waste into a compost bin
several animals will change
the waste into a useful
material called compost.
These animals are worms and
our old friends, bacteria
We can put this compost on
our gardens to help our
plants grow.
