Culturing Bacteria
Lab Preparation
In this lab you will be designing an experiment to
test the effectiveness of a product that contains
an antibacterial chemical.
Question
What are you going to test in this experiment?
Make an INFORMED prediction.
To be INFORMED you need background info:
- Ingredients in each product
-Claims made by the manufacturer
Must be written in IF…THEN… format
IF (Manipulated variable)
THEN (Responding variable)
Manipulated, Responding, Controlled variables
Experimental control group vs test
group
Preparing Petri dish
Divide the BOTTOM of the dish into 3 or 4
sections depending on the number of products
you are testing.
Write your initials and class period on the SIDE of
the LID.
Swabbing a sample
Use the sterile swab and slide it across the
sample area 2-3 times.
If you are testing:
Hand sanitizer: swab your fingers/hands
Mouthwash: swab the inside of your cheeks
Disinfectant: swab a surface that you would use
the disinfectant on
Create the LAWN
Gently rub the swab across the surface of your
agar
Storing your Petri dish
Tape your lid down
Place in incubator
Zone of inhibition
The size of the ZONE determines the
effectiveness of the antibiotic.
