Toddlers----Ages 1-3
Remember the cute baby?
Well…..they grow up
Growth of Toddlers
1.
1.
Growth slows; skill increase
Toddlers are ages 1-3 who walk unsteadily
(toddling around)
2. Height and weight both slow down
Toddlers gain about ½ lb. a month
1. Until they are 2, the circumference is all the
same for the head, chest, and abdomen
(stomach)
By age 3, the chest is larger
Teeth for Toddlers
1. Teeth are influenced by diet and
heredity
2. Most 1 year olds have 8 teeth
3. Flouride helps harden the enamel (the
outside layer) to provide resistance to
tooth decay
4. Heredity causes some people to inherit
an element which discourages decay
1. Tooth decay is caused by:
1. plaque (caused by bacteria) and 2.
leftover food that reacts with the plaque
that produces acids and causes decay
10. Brushing, rinsing, and cutting down on
sweets helps with decay
Motor (muscle) Skills
1. Motor skills are not intellectual; just physical
2. 2 types of motor skills----1. large----uses large muscles like
arms, legs, back muscles
2. small (sometimes called fine)----uses small
muscles like
muscles in hands, wrists,
feet, ankles
• Motor skills depend on muscles and the
central nervous system
• Physical exercise and repetition help
develop these skills
• 1st large motor skill is walking
then………climbing stairs
16. 1st small motor skill is learning to feed
themselves
1. Most spills are caused by poor eye-hand
coordination
2.During these years, most children can
draw:
circles, lines, and some shapes
