Pathogens
Virus
Bacteria
• Single cell organisms.
• Can be cured with anti-biotic.
• Ex. Strep throat, E-coli infection.
Fungal
• Single or multi cell organisms . Can be treated
with anti fungal medication.
• Can also be used to help make some meds
(anti-biotic, toxins)
Ex. some rashes like thrush, athletes foot.
Protozoa
• Single-celled parasites living and multiplying in
the body.
• The general term for these parasites is protozoa.
• Protozoa enter the body through the mouth or
skin.
• Protozoa that enter through the mouth usually do
so through unclean water or food. Protozoa that
enter through the skin usually do so through an
insect bite.
• Treated with various medications and even
surgery, results vary.
Transmission
• How you get a pathogen or how you get sick
•
•
•
Direct
Person to person most common way Std's are spread
Animal to person
Mom to Unborn child- through the placenta or during labor
Indirect
• Droplet transmission- cough or sneeze. Only go about 3 feet
• Particle transmission- smaller than droplets can stay in the air for
extended periods of time and travel through air currents.
Vaccines
• Biological preps that improve immunity to a
virus.
• They usually contain a small amount of the
virus (Active) or something that can resemble
the virus (Latent).
• Vaccines stimulate the immune system and
give it the ability to recognize and destroy the
virus if it encounters it later.
