Fossils
Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of
animals, plants, and other organisms from the
remote past.
Conditions suitable for making fossils are:
- Quick burial in moist sediment eg. Mud, sand, tar
- Lack of oxygen and bacteria (prevent decay)
- Lack of predators to dig up or eat the parts
- Organism has hard parts eg. Bones, shells or teeth
There are 5 types of fossils:
Mould
Petrified
Carbonised
Cast
Unaltered
Fossil Practical
Aim:
To make a mould and a cast fossil
Equipment: For the mould; Shells, Coral, Playdough
For the cast; Melted Chocolate, plastic trays
Method:
For the mould; press the shell or coral into
the playdough
For the cast; pour the melted chocolate into
the tray and put into the fridge
