MICROBOLOGICAL INDUCED COROSSION
(MIC) PROTECTION FOR CONCRETE
SEWERAGE SYSTEMS

History of MIC?
“Concrete
Eating”.
Even today, almost 60 years after the 1945
discovery of Microbial Induced Corrosion
(MIC) by C.D. Parker we continue to
incorrectly refer to the corrosive
deterioration of sewer pipe as
“a H2S Gas Problem”
Microbiologically
Induced Corrosion.
The primary problem for concrete in the
sewer environment is Thiobacillus
thiooxidans (concretivorous) – Latin for
“concrete-eating”.

ConMICShield is a revolutionary technology
for the effective and economical prevention
of Microbiologically Induced Corrosion
commonly developed on concrete pipe and
manholes in sanitary sewer systems

AP/M PERMAFORM
Step 1:
Anaerobic bacteria form in
raw sewerage and produce
H2S. Factors contributing
to rapid bacterial growth
are temperature, retention
time, high BOD levels and
turbulence.
AP/M PERMAFORM
Step 2:
Turbulence form force
mains, drop manholes,
steep grade changes and
pumping stations allow the
H2S to release into the
atmosphere in pipes and
manholes.
AP/M PERMAFORM
Step 3:
H2S is converted into
sulfuric acid H2SO4 by the
aerobic thiobacillus
bacteria that grow on the
concrete surfaces above the
waste water flows.
AP/M PERMAFORM
Step 4:
Sulfuric acid H2SO4
produced by the aerobic,
thiobacillus bacteria
quickly corrode the
concrete resulting in severe
structural damage to the
pipe and manholes

TRADITIONAL APPROACH TO CONTROL CORROSION
Different approaches to control corrosion of the
structures, normally is done by placing a barrier
between the concrete and the corrosive acid.
These techniques are not appropriate to protect
from MIC.
These can be generally classified as below.
i. Protective Barriers like Sewer Lining
Techniques.
ii. Elimination/Control of Gas.
iii.Treatment of sewerages.
iv.Substitute for concrete products.
Protective Barriers like Sewer Lining Techniques
Various types of lining available are Polyurea
Lining, PVC lining, RotaLoc Lining, HDPE
Lining, High Alumina Lining, Purethane, & etc.
Common causes found with these systems:i. Delaminating.
ii. Pinholes or Rips on the liner or coat.
iii. Best systems involve specialized products and equipments
and can be expensive.

• When a single cell microorganism comes
in contact with the polymer in ConShield®
the cell membrane ruptures and the
organism dies.
SOLUTION
BREAK THE CHAIN
Attack and kills the bacteria breaking the
biological chain of events that produces the
sulfuric acid.

ConMICShield is a liquid admixture that is
easily dosed at the plant for new precast
structures or in the field for new mortar
linings used for rehabilitation. ConMICShield
prevents the acid-producing bacteria
(thiobacillus) from colonizing into
concentrations that produce sulfuric acid.

ConMICShield molecularly bonds to the
cement particles. It cannot wash off,
cannot chip off, cannot peel off, delaminate
or pinhole. ConMICShield thoroughly
impregnates the concrete matrix. Scraping
the surface only serves to expose
additionally treated concrete. You never
run out of protection.
