3 Forms of the Disease
Bubonic Plague- painful lymph node
swellings
Septicemic Plague (also called “blood
poisoning)- attacked the blood system
Pneumonic Plague- attacked the
respiratory system
The Bubonic Plague
• Painful lymph node
swelling
• Oozing pus and blood
• Dark blotches  Black
Death!
• Mortality Rate: 30-75 %
• Once it explodes, death
soon follows
The Septicemic Plague
• Attacked the blood
system
• Skin turns deep shades
of purple (almost
black) The Black
Death
Mortality Rate: close to
100%.
The Pneumonic
Plague
•2nd most
commonly seen
form of the Black
Death
Airborne
transmission
Infected the lungs
Mortality Rate :
90-95%
What caused the Black Plague?
Remember PERCEPTION vs. REALITY???
What is the difference?
Perception
• People living in the Middle Ages thought
that God was punishing them for their sins
so he sent the plague down to kill them
• Religion controlled everything
• No scientific reasoning behind this theory
But this is what ACTUALLY
caused the Black Plague
(REALITY)
The Disease Cycle
Flea drinks rat blood
that carries the
bacteria.
Bacteria
multiply in
flea’s gut.
Human is infected!
Flea bites human and
puts infected blood
into human wound.
Flea’s gut clogged
with bacteria.
The Path of the Plague

Newton)
• Why would the city be the most affected?
Hint: Think about the ways in which the
countryside differs from the city?
What were the
effects
of the Black Death??
Effects
• Workers who survived could demand more
money and fair treatment
