Transcript Infectious Diseases
Any
disease that is caused by an agent that has
invaded the body.
o These are caused by:
• Person to person contact
• Food and water
• Animals
• Something in the environment
Sneezing
Coughing
Sharing
Drinks
Contaminated
food
o Example: Salmonella
Contaminated
water
o Drinking from streams and lakes
From
animal bites we can get rabies,
malaria, Lymes disease, West Nile etc.
Pathogens
that are present on
most of the objects around you.
o Door handles
o Phones
o A pathogen is any agent that causes disease.
• Examples:
• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Fungi
• Protozoan
• Parasites
A
tiny single cell organism that lives
everywhere on earth.
o Examples:
• tuberculosis, tetanus, sinus infection
o Treatments:
• Antibiotics (which prevent growth and
division of bacteria.
A
disease causing particle made of genetic
material and a protein coat.
o Examples: Chicken pox, flu, measles,
colds, AIDS
o Treatment: Medication to treat the
symptoms and prevent further production
in human cells.
Bacterial
infections: Can be treated with
antibiotic
o Examples: strep throat, sinus infections
Viruses: Can only treat the symptoms. Some
viruses just have to run their course.
o Examples: flu, cold, mumps, measles,
hepatitis

Organisms
that absorb and use nutrients of
living or dead organisms.
o Examples: athletes foot, ringworm, yeast
infections
o Treatment: over the counter meds or
prescription
Single
celled, microscopic organisms.
o Leading cause of death in some parts
of the world.
• Example: malaria
• Prevention: good hygiene and
health
Get
energy and nutrients from feeding
on other things.
o Examples: Head lice, tape worm,
lymes disease
Physical
Barriers: skin, mucous
membranes
o Consider these to be like a defensive
line
Inflammatory
Response: reaction to
injury or infection that is characterized
by pain, redness, swelling.
o This would be the linebackers
Immune
system: Contain certain types
of blood cell and antibodies.
o Safety
If
the pathogen makes it past your
immune system and score a
touchdown, you are now officially sick!
