THE SUN
• The Sun is the center of our solar system.
• The Sun is just a medium-sized star.
• The Sun is made of hot gases that give off
energy by heat and light.
• If the Sun were hollow, it would take a
million Earths to fill it up.
• The Earth is 93 billion miles from the Sun.

The Planets
• A planet is a ball of rock or gas, or both, that
travels around a star.
• There are nine well-known planets in our
Solar System.
• The planets orbit the sun.
• The order of the planets from the Sun is:

Mercury
• Mercury is closest to the Sun, so it is
very hot.
• Mercury has almost no atmosphere.
• Mercury orbits the Sun in 88 days.
• Mercury rotates one time in 59 days.
• Mercury has many craters.
• Mercury has no moons.

• Venus takes 224.7 days to revolve
around the sun.
• Venus takes 243 to rotate on its axis.
• Venus is smaller than the Earth.

The Family of the Sun
(To the tune of Farmer in the Dell —
click the link, then click BACK to hear
the tune.)
1.The family of the Sun,
The family of the Sun,
Nine planets all in all
In the family of the Sun.
4. We love the Earth, our home,
Its oceans and its trees,
We eat its food, we breath its air,
So no pollution, please.
2.Mercury is hot,
And Mercury is small.
Mercury has no atmosphere at all.
It’s just a rocky ball.
5. Mars is very red.
It’s also dry and cold.
Someday you might visit Mars,
If you are really bold.
3. Venus has thick clouds
That hide what is below.
The air is foul,
the ground is hot
It rotates very slow.
6. Jupiter is big.
We’ve studied it a lot.
We found that it has 27 moons
And a big red spot.

7. Saturn has great rings.
We wondered what they were
Now we know they’re icy rocks
Which we saw as a blur.
9. Pluto’s last in line,
It’s farthest from the sun.
It’s small and cold and icy, too.
To land there won’t be fun.
8. Uranus is faint
And Neptune’s light is weak,
We’re so glad the Voyager
Gave us all a peek.
10. The family of the Sun,
The family of the Sun,
Nine planets all in all,
In the family of the Sun.
