Bog Mummies
Created by: Laura Warren
Interesting Facts
The bog-watery environment does not
permit the growth of bacteria that
will help decay flesh.
The water contains certain acids that
act to tan the skin
If the natural bacteria action is
prevented and the skin is tanned, the
conditions are right for producing a
mummy
Future of Bog Bodies
It's unlikely that many new bog bodies will ever
be found--for two reasons.
In many northern European countries, peat can
no longer be dug from the few bogs that
remain. If peat isn't cut, bodies and objects
will not be found.
So much of the peat cutting is mechanized that
a bog discovery would be caught too late to be
of much use.
The last bog body found in England was
chopped into 70-plus pieces before it was
"rescued."
Lindow Man
Location:
Discovered in an England peat bog, died
between A.D. 50 and A.D. 100, possibly
in March or April he died.
Scientists found:
When the body was examined, that the
man had been murdered. He was either a
Celtic priest or a king.
Preservation:
Exceptional - his last dinner was still in
his stomach, a beard was in tact, hands
free of calluses, and the fingernails were
in very good condition.
Borremose Woman
Location: Denmark
Discovery: Some scientists believe that she may have become
trapped in a bog and (as she was drowning) was attacked by
predators.
Many scientists will never know what happened to many of the
bog mummies that have been discovered.
Preservation: Some bones are missing but overall she was in
fairly good condition.
Yde Girl
Location: She was found in the Netherlands and can
now be seen in the Drents Museum of Assen, in the
Netherlands.
Discovery: The Yde girl was found in a bog and has
been reconstructed. Archaeologists reconstructed
her face by using artificial eyes, skin, and adding
more hair to what was already there. They finished
her off by executing her face with plaster, clay, and
wax.
Preservation: In order to reconstruct any mummy
their skull had to be well preserved to give artists
an idea of what they looked like.
