• A serious bacterial infection of the uterus
• Occurs within a week of calving
• Infection can spread to bloodstream and can cause
an infection of the entire body
• Bacteria invades the uterus
• Dirty birthing environment
• Most commonly right after birth when the uterus is most
susceptible
• More likely to happen if it has been a difficult birth or
if the mother has failed to deliver a fetus or placenta
