ANTIBIOTICS
and
ESSENTIAL OILS
By Kristy West, RN, MA
ANTIBIOTICS
In 3500 BC the Sumerian doctors would give
patients beer soup mixed with snakeskins and turtle
shells.
Babylonian doctors would heal the eyes by using an
ointment made of frog bile and sour milk.
The Greeks used many herbs to heal ailments.
All of these "natural" treatments contained some sort
of antibiotic.
ANTIBIOTICS
1871: The surgeon, Joseph Lister began researching the phenomenon
that urine contaminated with mold would not allow the successful growth
of bacteria.
1890s: German doctors, Rudolf Emmerich and Oscar Low were the first
to make an effective medication that they called pyocyanase from
microbes. It was the first antibiotic to be used in hospitals. However, the
drug often did not work.
1928: Sir Alexander Fleming observed that colonies of the bacterium
Staphylococcus aureus could be destroyed by the mold Penicillium
notatum, demonstrating antibacterial properties.
ANTIBIOTICS
1935: Prontosil, the first sulfa drug, was
discovered by German chemist Gerhard
Domagk
1942: The manufacturing process for Penicillin G
Procain was invented by Howard Florey and
Ernst Chain. Penicillin could now be sold as a
drug. Fleming, Florey, and Chain shared the
1945 Nobel Prize
ANTIBIOTICS
1943: American microbiologist Selman Waksman
made the drug streptomycin from soil bacteria,
the first of a new class of drugs called
aminoglycosides. Streptomycin could treat
diseases like tuberculosis, however, the side
effects were often too severe.
1955:Tetracycline was patented by Lloyd
Conover, which became the most prescribed
broad spectrum antibiotic in the United States.
ANTIBIOTICS
1957: Nystatin was patented and used to cure
many disfiguring and disabling fungal
infections.
1981: SmithKline Beecham patented
Amoxicillin or amoxicillin/clavulanate
potassium tablets, and first sold the antibiotic
in 1998 under the trade names of Amoxicillin,
Amoxil, and Trimox. Amoxicillin is a
semisynthetic antibiotic.
ANTIBIOTICS
Antibiotics (antibacterials) are drugs
derived wholly or partially from bacteria
or molds and are used to treat bacterial
infections.
They are ineffective against viral and fungal
infections.
Antibiotics either kill microorganisms or
stop them from reproducing, allowing the
body's natural defenses to eliminate
them.
ANTIBIOTICS
Drug resistance is considered to be one of the
leading causes of deaths in the U.S.
According to the National Institute of Health,
more than 70,000 die each year from it.
These patients acquired the infection while they
were in a hospital being treated for something
else, according to the May 1997 documentary,
The Coming Plague. No known antibiotics can
help these patients, and they die.
ANTIBIOTICS
To make matters worse, experts estimate that
physicians in the United States alone, write 50
million antibiotic prescriptions a year to treat
disease actually caused by viruses, which
antibiotics do not affect.
According to a CDC study, pediatricians
prescribe antibiotics 65 percent of the time if
they sense parents expect them, but only 12
percent of the time if they sense parent do not
expect them.
ANTIBIOTICS
Common Side Effects
Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
Fungal Infections
Allergic Reaction
GI Complications
ANTIBIOTICS
Rare side-effects:
Formation of kidney stones (when taking sulphonamides)
Abnormal blood clotting (when taking some
cephalosporins)
Sensitivity to sun (when taking tetracyclines)
Blood disorders (when taking trimethoprim)
Deafness (when taking erythromycin and the
aminoglycosides)
Kidney Failure (when vancomycin administered too
quickly)
ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH
A 1999 Journal of Clinical Periodontology
study found that a mouthrinse with the
essential oils of thyme, peppermint,
wintergreen, and eucalyptus oils was more
effective in improving oral health than a
fluoride-based antiseptic
ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH
Melaleuca, lavender, peppermint and
thyme essential oils showed the strongest
killing power against MRSA and VRE
…according to studies at the Western
Infirmary, Glasgow, UK.
ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH
In 1987, in one of the most comprehensive
studies conducted, scientists in Scotland
identified the most powerful antibacterial
essential oils – thyme, cinnamon, clove and
geranium.
Cinnamon, thyme and clove essential oils
killed 92% of 25 different gram negative and
positive bacterial strains, according to
research published in the International
Journal of Food Microbiology.
ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH
In 2006 researchers identified the most
powerful antifungal essential oils.
Cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, geranium
and thyme were equal or superior to the
powerful anti-fungal drug, Hexaconazole.
ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH
An essential oil blend of clove, cinnamon,
lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary killed
over 99% staph bacteria after only 12
minutes of diffusion. The Journal of
Essential Oil Research, September/October
2001

Dr. Jean C. Lapraz, the famed French
researcher, reported in 1985 that he couldn't
find a single bacteria or virus that could live
in the presence of the essential oils of
cinnamon or oregano.
