Vocabulary
Sun
The star at the center of the solar
system.
Solar System
A star and all the planets and other
objects that revolve around it.
Star
A huge ball of very hot gases in space.
Planet
A large body that revolves around a
star.
Revolution
The act of traveling in a closed path.
Rotation
To spin around an axis.
Axis
An imaginary line that runs through
the center of Earth from the North
Pole to the South Pole.
Optical Telescope
An optical telescope is a telescope
which is used to gather and focus
light mainly from the visible part of
the electromagnetic spectrum.
Phase
One of the shapes the moon seems to
have as it orbits Earth.
Seasons
One of the four natural divisions of the
year, spring, summer, fall, and
winter.
Hemisphere
The division of Earth into two sphere’s:
the Northern Hemisphere and the
Southern Hemisphere.
Cyclical
Recurring in cycles or periods of time.
Satellite
Man-made equipment that orbits
around the earth or the moon.
Orbit
The path of one object in space around
another object.
Constellations
A pattern of stars that form an
imaginary picture or design in the
sky.
