THE BIRDS & THE BEES TALK
Sexual Reproduction – Two
parent organisms combine
genetic information to form a
genetically different offspring
Females produce eggs and males
produce sperm
Session 5
FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
• Ovary – produce
eggs
• Fallopian tubes –
deliver eggs to
uterus; where
fertilization occurs
• Uterus –
houses/develops
baby
• Vagina – birth
canal

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
bladder

• Vas Deferens–
delivers sperm to
urethra
• Urethra– delivers
sperm/urine out
of body
• Epididymis–
Stores/matures
sperm
• Teste– produce
sperm
Session 5

FETAL DEVELOPMENT
First Trimester –
heartbeat,
nervous system, limb buds with
fingers & toes, nose/ears/eyes
noticeable
Second Trimester -
fine
hair, vernix caseosa, gender can be
distinguished, organs functioning
(except lungs), movement
12 weeks

Third Trimester -
eyes open,
fatten up, less movement, head
down, lungs mature

BLOOD
Session 5
Plasma – water, lipids,
proteins, hormones
Leukocytes (white blood
cells) – immune system
Platelets – clotting

Erythrocytes (red blood
cells) – transport O2 and
CO2

Session 5
FIGHTING ILLNESS
Leukocytes & the Immune System
2 responses:
1. Specific– direct; targeted; go after
a specific pathogen; lag time
(vaccines & antibiotics)
2. Nonspecific – general;
inflammation; immediate
Session 5
FIGHTING ILLNESS:
BACTERIA VS. VIRUSES
Bacteria – are LIVING and can be
killed (antibiotics)
Viruses – are NONliving and canNOT
be killed (can only treat symptoms
and try to prevent infection)

Session 5
KEEP YOURSELF HEALTHY
Vaccines: train immune system to
recognize viruses quickly
Wash hands!
Cover the cough!
Finish the antibiotics – helps
prevent bacteria from developing
resistance to medications
Wash hands!
