and read some of the facts on STDS.
 Write down 5 things from the website that you
saw/learned. I will know if you fabricate this
because know the website pretty well myself.

Gonorrhea
Pathogen=Bacteria
 Where=Penis, vagina,anus,throat,eye
 How=direct mucous membrane contact
during sex or oral sex (throat)
 Symptoms=burning discharge from penis,

beware women have hardly any
symptoms, can cause PID, can cause
sterility, arthritis
 Often confused with Chlamydia
Genital Warts






Pathogen=Human papiloma
virus (HPV)
Where=Genitals, anus
How=Sex
Symptoms=warts on genitals
and anus
IMPORTANT: HPV can be
transmitted even if you don’t
have visible warts!
Causes problems in women-ups
their chance of getting cervical
cancer 
Hepatitis
TWO TYPES: Hep A and Hep B
 Pathogen=Virus
 Where=Hep A-mouth, Hep B-genitals
 How=Hep A-anal-oral sex or contaminated
water
Hep B-saliva, sex, blood and needles
 Symptoms=flu like symptoms, dark urine,
ab pain, jaundice

Chlamydia






Most common STD in the U.S today!!
Pathogen=bacteria
Where=penis,vagina, anus, mouth
How=Sex
Symptoms=painful urination, watery discharge,
burning, itching, pelvic pain, bleeding in
between periods. Beware: sometimes no
symptoms in women 
Treatment = same as gonorrhea ….antibiotics
such as tetracycline or doxacycline erythromycin
(all antibiotics)
Genital Herpes
Pathogen=herpes simplex
2 VIRUS
 Where=Fab 4, transfer to
eyes if sore is touched
 How=direct, intimate
contact
 Symptoms=painful blisters
or sores on genitals,
swollen glands, fever,
headaches, tiredness

Syphilis





Pathogen=BACTERIA
Where=Fab 4, break in
skin
How=congenital mucous
membrane contact with
sores during sex
Symptoms= “chancre”
which goes away, fatigue,
fever, sores, rash, hair
loss, nervous system
damage, insanity, death
Treatment=penicillin,
doxycycline etc. it is
curable
Herpes






2 types: Type 1 are cold sores or blisters on
face/mouth and type 2 are on genitals
Pathogen=Virus
How=Through mucous membranes
Where=Mouth and genitals
Symptoms=Pop up 2-20 days after infection.
Sores, burning tingling
Treatment=No cure for herpes, medications as
seen on commercials only reduce the outbreaks
and make them come less often that’s it.
AIDS-The most serious STDS
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
Pathogen=(virus) HIV (human Immuno-Deficiency
virus)
 Where=penis,vagina, mouth, rectum, blood, mucous
membranes
 How= 4 major ways: sex, sharing drug needles, mother
to baby or blood transfusions.
NOT transmitted through insects, toilets, kissing etc.
 Symptoms=skin rashes, diarrhea, fever, weight loss,
dry cough, swollen glands, loss of appetite
 Test to find out if you have HIV you get a blood test.
Special test called ELISA and Western Blot will detect if
you have AIDS
 NO CURE…but Treatment is AZT a drug that SLOW the
process
 People will die between 6 months-3 years after
finding out they have AIDS 


