Xylitol is a naturally occurring
sweetener that can be found in
fruits, vegetables and mushrooms.
Xylitol is a substance similar in
appearance and texture to sugar.
It is produced commercially from
birch and other hard wood trees.
Xylitol and Teeth
Xylitol is a five carbon sugar that cannot be
metabolized by S. Mutans.
Inhibits the growth of S. Mutans, reducing caries
susceptibility.
Xylitol enhances remineralization.
Xyltiol is non acidogenic and non
cariogenic.
History
Emil Fischer
First discovered in 1891 by German
chemist, Emil Fischer.
Rediscovered during World War II when
Finland was suffering from a shortage of
sucrose (sugar).
During this time Finland began using it as
a sugar substitute.

Xylitol was used as a sugar substitute in the
diabetic diet.
1963: Xylitol is approved for use in the
United States by the FDA.
The use of xylitol for dental purposes began
in the 1970’s
1975: The first xylitol chewing gum was
launched in Finland and the United States.

of Various Xylitol-Containing Products
(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).
To determine the amount of xylitol in saliva and plaque after
use of chewing gum, sucking tablets, candy tablets, toothpaste,
and rinse.
12 healthy children (6 boys, 6 girls mean age 11.5 years)
Unstimulated saliva was samples at 1,3,8,16, and 30 minutes
after use.
Supragingival plaque was collected and pooled after 5,15,
and 30 minutes.
Xylitol Concentration in Saliva and Dental Plaque after Use
of Various Xylitol-Containing Products
(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).
All xylitol containing products resulted in significantly
increased levels immediately after intake and
remained elevated for 8 – 16 minutes in the different
groups.
The highest mean value in saliva was obtained
immediately after use of chewing gum.
The lowest mean was demonstrated after using
toothpaste.
Xylitol Concentration in Saliva and Dental Plaque after Use
of Various Xylitol-Containing Products
(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).
No significant differences were demonstrated between
chewing gum, candy tablets, sucking tablets, and rinses.
In dental plaque after using the rinse the values remained
significantly elevated during the entire 30 minute follow
up.
Commonly used xylitol containing products gave elevated
concentrations of xylitol in saliva and plaque for at least
8 minutes after intakes.
