Tana Beles Water Integrated Resource
Development Project
• The largest lake in Ethiopia (Area : 3150 sq. km, Basin :
150000 sq. km)
• The source of the Blue Nile
• A growth corridor

HIS implementation : Needs analysis
• Think big, start small : Tana Beles IS is a « template »,

must be deployed to the others basins
Water management will respond to a distributed
organization, not centralized : More responsabilities at
basin level, data collection, data validation, dissemination
and decision making
A low cost of implementation is expected
based on International standards data exchange
Data dissemination to stakeholders and partially to
general public
Why CUAHSI (the pros and cons)
Pros
• An open source :

•
• Needed missing functionalities :
• Available software
• gap filling,
• Reuse existing code
• rating curves management
• Module extension model of

A shared variable repository
A unique way to access multiple
databases located at different places:
• Water One Flow Web Service
• Data transmitted in WaterML XML
format (OGC standard)
• A unique semantic managed by

Main Conclusions
• This project introduces CUAHSI Data model in Ethiopia
and provides data management tools
• The added value of CUAHSI will be obtained when it will
be deployed to the others basins :
• Data sharing, use of hydrodesktop
• Use of a controlled vocabulary at National level
