What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how
can it aid in water planning?
A GIS is a system designed to capture,
store, manipulate, analyze, manage and
present all types of geographical data.
Geographical Data:
Latitude/Longitude
Addresses
Remote sensing data
The application of GIS in water planning
Mobile GIS with smartphones & tablets:
citizens collect water problems and report
Mobile GIS: collect accurate stream
data and upload to an enterprise GIS
Web server GIS: develop maps
of water projects for your team &
share online! More from Janet
Desktop GIS: GIS
Technician conducts analysis
of sediment transport and
produces maps for meetings
GIS Data Creation, Analysis & Map Production
SPATIAL DATA CREATION & ANALYSIS:
Edit data in maps using a desktop, web, or mobile interface
Analyze spatial information, perform statistics
Present the results through a map, table or chart
Skill level: GIS professional
Software Examples:
Open Source (May be modified by programmer & some are free)
