Borrowing from other libraries
• Most Canadian university libraries have agreed to extend inperson borrowing privileges to students, faculty and staff
across the country
• You need a valid university identification card – your
UwinCARD
• Reciprocal borrowing privileges are determined by each
library, so loan periods may be shorter and some library
materials (e.g., journals, videos and books on course
reserve) may not be available for loan.
• Please note that you won’t have offsite access to other
university libraries’ electronic resources through this
program because of licensing restrictions, but you may have
onsite access to them depending on the policies of the
libraries
• For more information and a list of libraries participating in
this program click on Borrowing from other libraries in
Canada

Looking for books on your topic…
• Use the Library Catalogue (PRIMO)
• The Leddy Library also subscribes to several
electronic book collections
• NOTE: not all of our e-books are in the
library catalogue yet, so you need to search
in the individual e-book collections as well as
in the library catalogue
• The following is the search screen for Simple
Search in the library catalogue (PRIMO)
The library catalogue assumes “AND” between your
search terms, so you don’t need to include “AND”
between the words and phrases in your search statement
If you want to search for something as a phrase, put it in
quotation marks if you’re using the Simple Search screen
– e.g., “social work”
When you truncate a word, the database will take the root
of that word and look for all variations. The truncation
symbol is an asterisk (*) for the library catalogue, so if
you type child* into your search statement, the library
catalogue will look for any word that starts with child – so
child, children
“My Account” will
give you information
about your library
account – books
checked out, any
requests, fines etc.
When you do a
search in the library
catalogue, you can
choose to save and
organize references
in e-Shelf
Clicking on “Help”
will bring up the help
screens for PRIMO
Simple Search continued…
• If you want to link your search terms with OR
or NOT, then you need to include these terms
in your search statement and CAPITALIZE
them
Clicking on
Advanced Search
will take you to the
Advanced Search
screen, which gives
you more options
for your search,
such as search
limits
Leddy Library catalogue
Advanced Search
• You can also use the Advanced Search option
for the library catalogue
• This gives you a variety of additional options,
such as the ability to put limits on your
search, including publication year limits
• Instead of using quotation marks, you can
choose the “is (exact)” option to search for
something as a phrase
When you sort
your references by
relevance, the
library catalogue
will put the
references that
appear to be most
relevant to your
search at the top
of your list
Leddy Library catalogue
Virtual Browse
• If you see a “Virtual Browse” link appearing
under any of your references, you can click
on it and you will then bring up any library
materials that appear before and after your
item on the library shelf
• So you can virtually browse the library
shelves for other materials on your topic
One Stop Search
• One Stop Search allows you to search several
library resources at once, including the
library catalogue and a number of our
databases
• It is important to note that not all of our
databases are included in One Stop Search,
so it is also important that you search the
individual specialized databases for Social
Work - see the Leddy Library’s Social Work
guide
