Multimedia Design Guidelines
Multimedia consists of
different media forms,
including audio, video,
animation, and text.
Each type of multimedia
has it own guidelines for
use.
multimedia The integration of
elements such as graphics,
text, audio, video, animation,
and interactivity by means of
computer technology. (p. 244)
audio Live, streamed, or
recorded sound; often used on
Web pages to attract visitors’
interest and to impart
information. (p. 244)
video Live or recorded moving
images. (p. 244)
animation The movement of
text and graphics; a common
feature on the Web. (p. 244)

Multimedia Design Guidelines
Always consider file size
and download time when
using multimedia files.
Using streaming media
with a codec can reduce
the user’s wait time.
codec Compression and
decompression scheme
used with streaming media;
the Web server breaks the
transmission into pieces,
allowing the media to
display more quickly on the
user’s screen. (p. 245)

Downloading Multimedia Files from the Web
The Web can be a rich source of free multimedia files.
But, like image files, you must make sure that you use the
multimedia files ethically by following all of the rules set by
the site you are visiting.

Tools for Creating Multimedia Web Sites
Designers who create
multimedia Web sites use
a variety of multimedia
authoring tools.
These tools can allow you
to edit audio and/or video
files, as well as create
animations.
multimedia authoring
tools Special software
applications used by
Web site designers
and developers to
create multimedia Web
sites. (p. 247)

Evaluating Multimedia Web Sites
When you plan a multimedia Web site, ask yourself the
following questions:
• Do the multimedia files support each page’s goals?
• Are the pages cluttered?
• Do any media components distract visitors?
• Does the site give you the option to skip clips?
• Do components such as sound and video work correctly?
• Do the media components add to the enjoyment of the site?

Audio and Video Files
Many audio and video
files require a plug-in to
play. You can download
most plug-ins for free from
the company’s Web site.
plug-in An application that
works with a Web browser
to play a particular file
format, such as an audio or
video file. (p. 251)

Creating and Adding Audio Files to a Site
To create sound files, you will need a microphone and an
audio application to record audio and save it in a file.
You can incorporate sound into your Web pages in two
basic ways:
1. You can create a button and link a sound file to the button.
2. You can set the sound file to play automatically when the page
loads.

Creating Video Files
To create your own video
you need either a digital
or analog video
recorder. If you use an
analog video recorder,
you must translate the
video into a digital format
using a video capture
card.
digital video recorder A
device that creates digital
video that a computer can
use directly. (p. 253)
analog video recorder A
device that creates analog
video. This video must be
translated into a digital
format before a computer
can use it. (p. 253)
video capture card A circuit
board that can convert
analog video to digital video.

Adding Video Files to a Site
It can be challenging to include video clips on a Web site.
Many designers provide a link to the video clip to make
them easier for the user to access, rather than starting
when the page opens.

Adding Animation to a Site
Guide to Reading
Main Ideas
Key Terms
Animation provides the
appearance of motion.
One way of creating
animations is to use a
series of GIF images,
which you can incorporate
into a Web page in the
same way as a graphic.

Adding Animation to a Site
Animation Files
You can animate both
graphics and text on your
Web site. The simplest is
to animate GIF files.
Another popular animation
tool is Macromedia
Flash. Flash files are
more sophisticated than
animated GIFs and often
have a faster download
time.
Macromedia Flash A
popular animation formation,
usually carrying a .swf
extension. (p. 258)

Creating and Using Animation Files
When creating a GIF animation, the file must contain all of
the GIF images used as well as the instructions to the
browser.
Several applications such as Adobe ImageReady and
Microsoft PhotoDraw help you create animated GIFs.

Incorporating Animation Files into a Site
FrontPage allows you to
insert and resize files as
you would image files. It
also lets you use DHTML
to create text animations
or page transitions.
Dynamic HTML
(DHTML) Available in
FrontPage as a tool to
create animations such as
scrolling text (marquees)
and page transitions.
