What is a WebQuest?
"...an
inquiry-oriented activity in which
most or all of the information that learners
interact with comes from resources on the
Internet.”
Provides
- Bernie Dodge (Co-creator of the WebQuest model)
a structured approach that
focuses on having students use web-based
resources rather than finding them
What is a WebQuest?
Poses
(Cont’d)
question students, which cannot be
answered simply by collecting and
regurgitating information - They must “…
transform information into something else
…” (March, 1998).
Designed to support learners' high order
thinking including analysis, synthesis and
evaluation

Poor WebQuests…
Are based around paper-based worksheets that are simply
converted into web pages, possibly with links to web resources
Ask close-ended questions or seek to result in neat, convergent
outcomes for students
Are of little personal relevance to students
Are based around tasks/issues that do not address real,
authentic problems with applications beyond the classroom
Do not interest, engage and motivate students
Are pitched at too high or low a level for the target audience
(ie, not challenging enough or “crush” students)
N.B. Vygotsky’s Zones of Proximal Development (ZPD)
Have poorly defined assessment/evaluation criteria (eg, rubrics
that focus on quantity but not quality)
Resources for evaluating WebQuests

Options for creating WebQuests
Create
Use
from scratch
HTML or web authoring tool such as
FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Nvu to develop web
pages from scratch
Upload to web server
Build
on an existing template
Download
a set of web pages with placeholders
to use as a starting point
Use HTML or web authoring tool to edit and
customise pages
Upload to web server
Options for creating WebQuests
(Cont’d)
Use
an automatic WebQuest generator
(NOT permitted for Assessment Item #2!)
Create
WebQuest by filling in online forms or
anwsering questions presented by a “wizard”
No need for web authoring or uploading
Examples: QuestGarden, Filamentality, Instant
WebQuest, PHPWebQuest, TeacherWeb
