Creating a Frames Page
A frames page contains two or more
windows (or frames), each displaying
a separate Web page
The Web pages in each frame can
contain their own scroll bars

Understanding Frames
A frames page, or a frameset, is a single
Web page that divides the browser
window into two or more windows
Frames pages do not contain content only the specifications to create the frames
within it
Use a frames page when you want each
frame to display content independent of
the other frames

Understanding Frames (cont.)
When you open a frames page in a
browser, first the browser opens the
frames page, then the pages set to open
in the frames
If the frames page contains three frames,
the browser is really displaying four Web
pages - the frames page and one page in
each frame

Advantages of using frames pages:
– Allows you to provide uniform information,
such as navigation options or a company logo
– Hyperlinks in one frame might link to other
pages in the Web site; hyperlinks in another
frame might open pages in a different frame
– You can set a page displayed in a frame so
that it never changes, insuring that information
is always visible
– A frames page can load faster than a Web
page that doesn’t contain frames

Disadvantages of using frames pages:
– Some browsers cannot display frames pages
– The main frame appears in less space than
what is provided by a full browser window
– Frames pages can be overwhelming to
viewers if poorly designed

Understanding Frames (cont.)
When a frame is selected, a blue border
appears inside the frame’s border
After creating a frames page, two buttons
appear in each frame:
– The Set Initial Page button lets you set
an existing Web page to open in the
frame when the frames page opens
– The New Page button creates a new
page and at the same time set it to
open in the frames page

Understanding Frames (cont.)
Pages used in a frames page are like any other
Web pages, but most are designed for use only in
a frames page
Each Web page in a frames page has a filename
and a title
Only the title of the frames page appears in the
browser’s title bar when the frames page is open
When the content of a Web page displayed in a
frame exceeds the space available, scroll bars
appear on the frame

Creating a Frames Page Using a
Template
The easiest and fastest way to include a
frames page in a Web site is to create it using
a template
A frames page template is a Web page that
contains the specifications for the individual
locations and sizes of the frames in a frames
page
When you create a frames page using a
template, FrontPage assigns each frame in
the page a name and creates its initial size
and location in the frames page

Creating a Frames Page Using a
Template (cont.)
FrontPage includes many different
frames page template to create frames
pages with two, three, and four frames
Templates include different orientations
for the frames
You should select the frames page
template that most closely matches the
arrangement of information you have
planned

Setting Pages to Open in a
Frames Page
When you create a frames page, each
frame contains the Set Initial Page and
New Page buttons
Use the Set Initial Page button to open
an existing Web page in the frame
Use the New Page button to create a
new Web page in a frame
You don’t usually add pages appearing
in a frames page to the Web site’s
navigation structure

Creating a New Page in a
Frames Page
When you open the frames page in a
browser, the browser opens a page in
each frame
The initial page that opens in each
frame might be one that already exists
in the site or a new page
You use the New Page button to create
a new page in a frame

that creates the frame
You are not deleting the Web page that
appears in the frame
To delete the page itself, you must delete it
in Folders view
