How Does Web Browsing Work?
The Process of Using a “Browser”
You type the URL of a requested Web
page such as www.yahoo.com.
A message is sent to a Domain Name
Server (DNS) which returns the “IP”
address (e.g., 68.142.226.34).
The browser then communicates directly
with that address requesting a response.
The requested response comes back in
the form of an HTTP page which is
displayed by the browser.
What’s in a Web Address?
Using a Domain Name
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
Each page within a Web site has its own unique URL
The BOLLI Web pages are part of the Brandeis Web site and our “URL”
is: www.brandeis.edu/bolli/members
Format Rules
For Brandeis University, you enter: www.brandeis.edu
A corresponding Internet IP address is substituted (i.e., 129.64.99.138)
by a “Domain Name Server”
You could optionally use the IP address to request a page
Cannot contain: spaces or special characters except “-”, “_” “/” and “.”
Must contain a minimum of three parts separated by a period “.”
Last part must be one of following: com, edu, gov, mil, net, us, ca, il, fr,
de, ru, etc.
