Reading: things to do
Principles
“Researching” and “teaching”

Principles 2
Doing easy reading builds
basic reading skills.
For specialized texts, an
analytical approach works
best.

Working with words
You should learn the
Longman Defining
Vocabulary as quickly as
possible, because it
constitutes about 60-80% of
a text.
4
Working with words
You should work on the
Academic Word List using
the AWL Highlighter and AWL
Gapmaker, because the AWL
combined with the LDV gives
about 90% coverage of most
texts.
5
Working with words 2
If you don’t have much time,
think about your priorities.
If you know most of the LDV
words, or if they don’t seem
so important, you may want
to concentrate on the AWL.

Working with words 3: Web Vocab
Profiler
After using the AWL
Highlighter and Gapmaker a
few times, you should try the
Web Vocab Profiler.
