• Why Web 2.0
– iGeneration, Gen-Y, Screenagers
• Search tendencies – all about fortuitous searching
– Very haphazard
– Often too broad or too narrow
– Last minute- not enough time to do it right
• The iGen kids almost universally reject text heavy
directions
– They literally look to the images first for context
• They will spend 20,000 hours on the web (87, Ferritier)
– Gaming, YouTube
» 20 Hours of new content is uploaded to YouTube servers
EVERY MINUTE
» We’re dealing with an explosion of visual content
• The answer is
– We can’t afford not to meet the kids where they
are…
• Use portals that they can relate to—
– Social media platforms (Edmodo, Edublogs, Collaborize
Classroom, etc.)
More reasons to choose Web 2.0
• Online forums give kids opportunities to
participate
– Earn intellectual recognition for 1st time
• Edit thoughts before posting= less ridicule
• Challenge their thinking- leads to higher order thinking

and projects
