How are E-Reserves
accessed?
Materials are housed on a library
server and are available via the
Libraries’ catalog, OSCAR
They can be accessed from any
web capable computer
Electronic Reserves
~ who may access?
Ohio State University students
who have paid fees for current
quarter
Access controlled by ptype
and expiration date
Issues …
for Students
•
•
•
•
Want fast downloads
Not restricted by library hours
No lines at copiers
Adobe Reader has problems
with some computer
configuratins (Mac Safari)
Issues …
Faculty awareness
• Outreach:
–
–
–
–
–
Campus mailings
Email
Brown bags for faculty
FAQ
Assessment (surveys)
Faculty referred to
detailed home page FAQ
Instructions and forms are
available on the Electronic
Reserves webpage accessible
from the Libraries’ main page…
Issues …
Copyright & Access
Must purchase separate III
“Copyright & Access” product
for copyright statement and
statistical reports on use of
resources, publisher & copyright
tracking.
Issues ….
Copyright & Access
Separate product also manages
– Single sign on authentication
(must authenticate for each
article viewed)
– Course password protection
(ptype / exp date restricts to
OSU patrons, but not
exclusively to class enrollees)
Issues …
Copyright & Access
Workarounds:
• Scan copyright statement as first page of
each article.
• Don’t accept materials that don’t meet
“fair use” standards
• Turn off III validation and use campus email validation for single sign on when we
use CMS
Issues …
Browsers
Netscape, Internet Explorer, Safari,
Foxfire generally all OK but some
versions may experience difficulty:
-AOL users: open AOL then switch to
either Netscape 7.0 or IE
-Safari users: download PDFs to the
desktop and open from there
-Netscape version 7.1 users:
switch to Netscape 7.0 or IE.
Future expectations
• Expect to fully incorporate
E-Reserves into Carmen (OSU’s
course management system),
by Fall 2006.
• Linking to other digital services,
including the Knowledge Bank,
D-Space, etc.
